Isang Daredevil, Aksidenteng Nakunan Ng Camera Ang Kanyang Pagkamatay Matapos Maglambitin Sa Napakataas Ng Building

A famous Chinese daredevil has died, even filming his death and last moments before plunging from a 62-storey skyscraper.

Wu Yongning was well-known for his dangerous stunts of scaling tall buildings without using safety equipment. In fact, he had thousands of followers on Weibo, China’s social media network, and posted dramatic videos and photos of himself atop the high-rise buildings.

According to the TIME report, Wu was part of the lucrative but dangerous activity called rooftopping – an endeavor that involves climbing skyscrapers to take photos and videos at the peak. The photographic evidence then goes viral on social media, propelling these risk-takers into the spotlight and instant stardom.

Prior to rooftopping, Wu had martial arts training and dabbled in television and film productions. He always warned his viewers to never attempt his skyscraper stunts, the BBC reported.

However, concerns for Wu began to rise among his followers when the 26-year-old stuntman stopped posting on his account. Details later surfaced regarding his death, as his girlfriend finally confirmed his demise through a social media post sometime in December. Wu died on November 8th while he was atop the high-rise building in the city of Chasha. According to his relative, the young man took part in a challenge to win the prize money of 100,000 yuan, or approximately Php762,000 in today’s exchange rate.

“He planned to propose to his girlfriend (the day after the challenge),” Wu’s step-uncle told the South China Morning Post. “He needed the money for the wedding, and for medical treatment for his ailing mother.” It was on November 9th when Wu’s girlfriend reportedly contacted authorities after he didn’t come home from the challenge. Recently, horrifying footage of Wu’s last moments was obtained from a phone he reportedly set up in another building to capture his daring feat.

In the video posted on the website Koreaboo, Wu was preparing and warming up for his stunt. He began to climb down from the edge and did a few pull-ups, as if testing his arms. He was able to pull himself up from the edge, and repeated the process, but at his last moments, Wu appeared to struggle and let go.

While there have been reports of rooftoppers falling to their deaths, most of these climbers still refuse to strap up for safety. Speaking to BBC, climber James Kington was quoted as saying, “The moment you start wearing safety equipment is the moment you’ve got doubt and when you’ve got doubt, that’s when things can go wrong.”
